Natural resource industries near Edmonton are forestry and oil mining. The oil mining is a very large supporter for all of Alberta's economy as well as Edmonton's. The Athabasca Oil Sands were originally founded in the mid-1800's and was turned into a mining operation in 1967. This project alone puts Canada at number 3 for oil reserves in the world. The main category of employment in this city is "Service-Based" because the amount of employees in this group is higher than any other. Forestry and oil-mining are not sustainable activities, whatsoever, making them detrimental to the natural aspect of the area. These two practices have and will destroy many animal and insect habitats, rivers, forests etc. What could increase the sustainability in this area would be to create solar and wind power fields to make up for the oil and begin using natural, reusable energy.
